History[]
Burford King was the adoptive father of Ernest Fairchild.
Raising Ernie
Sometime after the death of Ernie's biological parents, Buford and his wife Eunice adopted Ernest, though the two by no means were "parent material". While under the Kings care, Ernest was frequently abused, mainly by Buford himself. One known instance of this abuse involved torturing the boy with a hot curling iron on a cold Winter night after Ernest complained that he didn't have a blanket to keep warm[1].
Over the years, Ernest build up a silent anger and resentment towards Buford, and eventually leading him to make a deal with Lucifer to help him exact his revenge upon his foster father. In exchange for power, Ernest had to kill 665 sinners, and then finally Buford. While Ernest carried out the first half of the deal by poisoning a town's water supply, Buford was currently incarcerated at Widmark Maximum Security Prison. Under the guise of a simple family visitation, Ernest pulled out a concealed shard of glass and began stabbing Buford. Before Buford could be killed, security guards pulled Ernest away, and soon the teenager found himself as an inmate at Widmark.
When it was discovered that Ernest was responsible for the 665 deaths in the town of Lucretia, he was sentenced to death by electric chair. Buford was in attendance of the execution of Ernest, and watched in surprise as Ernest was not killed by the chair, but rather unleashed a supernatural power that turned him into "Evil Ernie"[2].
Determined to kill the escaping Buford, Ernie gave chase throughout the halls of the prison. Eventually managing to pin Ernie down, Buford cut off the teen's left arm with a saw. In retaliation, Ernie used a type of "acid touch" that made Buford's left arm explode. While Ernie was busy dealing with Uriel The Archangel, Buford enlisted the help of the captured Dr. Thana Thomas to help sew Ernie's arm to his body. Because of this, some of Ernie's supernatural energy transferred to Buford, and harnessed the evil within himself to become more powerful[3].
Eventually Ernie and Buford had their final showdown outside in the prison yard. Buford (who's body had taken on a more devilish form) was defeated by Ernie, who managed to control his left arm (now on Buford's body) and rip his foster father's heart out[4].
Ernie's Nightmare
Even years after Buford's death, Ernie still viewed him as one of the most dangerous foes he encountered. While traveling with Mary Young, Buford appeared to Ernie as a vision in a nightmare he had while awake. In Buford's presence, Ernie appeared as a helpless human boy, frightened by what kind of torture Buford had in mind for him. Ernie managed to snap out of this "nightmare" when Mary and Smiley approached him. Though he did realize it was nothing more than a vision, seeing Buford again in any form still managed to upset Ernie[5].
