History[]
In the later half of the 20th century, novelist Hunter Rose (born "Eddie") assumed the identity of Grendel, a masked assassin and gang leader who ruled New York City.
At some point in his career as Grendel, two archaeologist presented Rose with "The Eternity Codex", a paper containing a spell that ended up sending him across time and space into the 1932 New York City of another universe. While in 1932, he slowly began taking over Lorenzo Valenti's mob (and began a relationship with Valenti's daughter Sofia) as his Grendel persona, and published one novel (entitled "Gomorrah Highway") as Hunter Rose.
Of course, Rose's activities as Grendel didn't go unnoticed, and he had several confrontations with The Shadow. During what eventually became the last battle between the two, a severely wounded Rose stole The Shadow's Autogyro and used The Eternity Codex to return to his home universe and time before the Autogyro crashed in Central Park.
