In the distant past the old gods brought into existence a girl who would be a source of vengeance for Mitra. This Was like a God / demagogue creation myth where the lesser god would do something to aid the god.
“TEN THOUSAND YEARS BEFORE THE BIRTH OF CHRIST, AND AFTER THE FALL OF MIGHTY ATLANTIS, THERE BEGAN, O’ER THOSE ANTIQUE LANDSCAPES, THE AGE OF THE HYBORIAN GODS: CROM! MITRA! ERLIK! . . . FROM ELYSIUM THEN, MITRA PEERED WITH MOURNFUL EYE, INTO THE PRIMORDIAL MIST. HE SPOKE: "FORGE ME AN INSTRUMENT OF RETRIBUTION. I WISH TO PROPHESY THRU THE RAGE OF THE NAKED SWORD!" A SOLITARY VOICE ANSWERED. IT WAS THE THROATY RETORT OF ERLIK, THE DARK GOD, THE FALLEN ONE. HE SAID: "TWILL BE DONE." FROM BELOW,PURPLE FLAMES ETCHED THE FORM OF A WOMAN, A SINGULAR WOMAN, DOOMED TO ALONENESS, CURSED WITH BEAUTY ENOUGH TO DRIVE LEGIONS OF MEN TO MADNESS!”[1]
Red Sonja, Osin, Sumaro and Quillo Are on a quest to find the old gods. They come into a chamber With stone gods. Suumaro pulls a feather from his pouch, perhaps from a white owl, and with an enchantment and a flame of fire as he speaks "ANCIENT WATCHFUL LORDS! THE WATCHFUL GOD OF DAYS! THE WATCHFUL GOD WHO SLEEPS!", Quillo is released from the will of the dark god. Quillo looks for one last act of redemption. He also utters an enchantment and then gouges his eyes out with his thumbs. There is a lot of blood on the floor and he appears to be dying. with his eyes being gouged it prevents the Dark God from seeing what he has done for Suumaro. It appears it was a blood sacrifice necessary to wake the old God, and also hide from the eyes of the Borat-Na Fori and Kulan Gath what was to transpire. It is after the sacrifice that one of the stone gods is aroused, Kaleval, and he seems disturbed. He even mentions why should he not drink their blood and eat upon their flesh. Some gods are grumpy like that when they sleep too long. Eventually Red Sonja and Suumaro convinced him to join their cause.
Both Suumoro and Red Sonja where instruments and chosen by the goddess or Scathach for a purpose. Osin seemed unnecessary at the awakening of Kaleval. However, Osin and Kaleval bear a striking resemblance. The picture of a blood sacrifice appears over and over again in Red Sonja, and even in the retelling of the first Marvel issue story by Roy Thomas. There is the constant need for death of one that another might live. In this awakening and coming of Kulan Gath, it seems this order of life and death was necessary for the resurrection of Kulan Gath which he states was orchestrated by him, and Red Sonja was also an instrument used by him.
Red Sonja, in the giving of herself to Kaleval in sexual intercourse, was as she said, "I need you to help me reclaim myself... my home" In the flashback portions of the coming of Kulan Gath, Sonja stated that she would give her parents a proper burial by the blood of her enemies. Kaleval was needed to take out the rising Borat-Na Fori and purge the evil from her land. The motif of the needed blood sacrifice became clear when Kulan Gath was freed by Red Sonja killing the Borat-Na Fori manifest in the son of the dark god. Was Sonja aware of this? It seems Kaleval hinted of his demise. When Kaleval returns with Sonja to fight the army hordes of Borat-Na Fori. He tells them " tomorrow we fight and die, but tonight we shall feast!"[2] Also, in battle with he and his horse wounded, he encouraged his horse to continue to the end and they would meet on the other side.[3]
Later, in the after world Kaleval is seen in dreams and Sonja wants to be bested by him in a playful battle.[4] Much later he appears as Sonja travels the river Styx in Stygia. As she goes over a dark waterfall she encounters various people either wanting to drown her under the water or kill her in battle as she falls through the waters into the heavens then crashes to earth. She encounter various people she killed in battle before including Gannif and the Celestial One. As they are all attacking her she welcomes the battle but is eventually subdued by the number of assailants.
Kaleval drops from the sky smashing the Celestial One to the ground. Other friends in arms like Suumaro, Karena and her father join to help as well. Kaleval embraces her and affirms his love for her as all of them affirm their love and gratitude for her.[5]
