History[]

Rafael Vega was the Zorro of the 1930s.

Not much is known about Rafael's early life, except he grew up hearing stories about Zorro and his fight to aid the common man when the law was not there to help. After years of practice, he also became a skilled swordfighter and illustrator.

In September of 1938, Rafael came to New York City to try to sell his illustrations and stories to a publisher, but prior to arriving to the offices of any publisher, he was arrested by the "Black Police" simply because of his skin color. After escaping prison with the assistance of District Attorney Tony Quinn, Vega decided to fight back against the Black Police as under the guise of Zorro. He and a new vigilante called the Black Bat (District Attorney Quinn's alter ego) proceed to fight their way through the streets of New York until they reached the Empire State Building, where they teamed-up with The Spider and several other vigilantes, who were confronting the leader of the Black Police, The Master. Vega took on several members of the Black Police while The Shadow proceed to kill The Master, ending the Justice Party's reign of terror. It is unknown if Vega continued to be Zorro following these events.

Trivia

  • It's possible that the character of Rafael Vega was inspired by James Vega, a character from the 1937 film serial Zorro Rides Again. In the serial, James was a descendant of Diego de la Vega living in "modern times" (the 1930s) who took on the mantel of Zorro to stop the villain from taking over a railroad company.
