Synopsis for "The Message"Edit
Red Sonja brings down a night fowl for dinner. Later, she sets out on her journey after her meal, her horse, Thorne, is uneasy about something ahead. Sonja then hears a scream and rushes to find a man being attacked by several people who want to behead him. She quickly joins the fray and unleashes a volley of arrows upon the messenger's assailants. Sonja slays most of them and the messenger is surprised that he has been rescued by a single person. He comments that Sonja must fire arrows as rapidly as a trained Hyrkanian warrior.
Sonja and the messenger then exchange greetings, with the man remarking that "Your armor, woman, scarcely protects your modesty, let alone your vitals." Sonja retorts in turn that "Men are easily distracted. Most of them never even notice my sword… till their heads roll off their necks." The man tells Sonja that he is from Gathia, a day's ride away, and was delivering a message of mercy and peace to the Zedda tribes. Sonja‘s responds that his encounter with the tribes didn’t look so peaceful to her.
The messenger and Sonja stop at a watering hole. The messenger takes the first drink and begins to gag and choke. Suddenly, a serpentine vine emerges from bis mouth and begins to attack its host and Sonja. In the end, Sonja decapitates the man, which also kills the vine growing from him.
She takes the messenger's corpse to Gathia's city gates and requests entrance. One of the guards recognizes her as Red Sonja, and they begin firing arrows at her when she fails to drop her sword. Thorne is killed in the attack.
Trivia
Frank Thorne was the artist of the early Marvel series, and Sonja’s horse was spelled the same. It is as though Red Sonja needs a new ride.
