Smiley The Psychotic Button (born Richard Smiley) is a supernaturally possessed button and "companion" of "Evil Ernie" Fairchild.
Before The Button
Richard Smiley was the owner of a small independent restaurant called Smiley's Family Eating, which he operated with the assistance of his family: his wife Julia, son Robert, and daughter Samantha. Unfortunately, the restaurant was not very successful, and the Smileys were on the brink of closing its doors. To add another misfortune to the Smiley family, Julia discovered she had cancer, a diagnosis which was made public and attracted customers to the fleeting diner. While still distraught over his wife's illness, Richard couldn't help but feel happy about the return of business to the restaurant.
As Julia's health continued to deteriorate, Richard (who was once a devout religious man) cursed God's name in a fit of rage for giving his wife cancer. In that moment, Lucifer appeared before Richard, offering a deal to the business man: in exchange for Julia's good health, Richard would conduct Satanic rituals and kill sinners he found, and would feed their remains to his unsuspecting customers as his homemade burger patties. Richard agreed to Lucifer's deal.
With the restaurant now more popular than ever, Smiley's Family Eating became a national fast food chain. Richard continued to uphold his end of the deal with Lucifer, and with every sinner killed, Richard became more powerful, with Lucifer beginning to see Smiley as more of a threat than a pawn. When Lucifer confronted Richard, he discovered that Smiley was already on the verge of overwhelming him in terms of power. The two "partners" clashed in the kitchen of one of the restaurants, with Lucifer just barely able to defeat Richard. As punishment for becoming the ultimate source of evil on Earth, Richard's soul was trapped inside a small plastic button, normally given away at his restaurant locations as a toy. It was that moment that Smiley The Psychotic Button was born[1].
Creating "Evil Ernie"
In 1993, Smiley was in the possession of Ernest Fairchild's biological father, attached to the left side of his black leather jacket. Through Smiley's influence, Mr. Fairchild purposely wreaked his car while on the way to take his wife to the hospital (who was in labor at the time with Ernest), killing everyone in the car except Ernie[2][3].
The black leather jacket (with Smiley still attached) was passed down to Ernie. Over the years, Smiley began talking with Ernie, encouraging the teenager to turn to Lucifer to help deal with his abusive foster parents. A deal was struck between Lucifer and Ernie for the teen to kill 666 sinners in return for power to kill Ernie's foster father, Buford King. While Ernie managed to kill 665, the last kill needed to be Buford himself, who was currently incarcerated at the Widmark Maximum Security Prison. Ernie was eventually captured by law enforcement and sentenced to death at Widmark via electric chair. As his final request, Ernie wanted to wear the black leather jacket and Smiley, a request that the prison agreed to. When the electric chair was turned on, instead of killing Fairchild, his Lucifer-given powers manifested, and "Evil Ernie" was born. From that moment on, Smiley became Ernie's constant companion and "best friend", traveling with Ernie on his mission to kill sinners everywhere[4].
