When their homeworld of Thundera began to die, the Thundercats fled in search of a new home. Along the way, they were attacked by their long time adversaries, the Mu'Tants of Plun-Darr. In the resulting conflict, all but one of the ThunderCat ships were destroyed, and the remaining one is severely damaged, causing it to emergency land on the planet Third Earth. Lion-O the young hereditary leader of the ThunderCats, also discovers that his stasis pod malfunctioned, causing him to prematurely age to adulthood. He determines to lead the surviving ThunderCats as they establish a home on the mysterious new world. They soon find another ThunderCat, Calica, who appears to be have been abducted by Mu'Tants from Thundera when she was a youth. They also run into conflict themselves with Mu'Tants, both those who have pursued them to Third Earth, and the planet's own natives inhabitants, as well as a new threat in the form of the demon-priest Mumm-Ra.
