Xanesha had Valeros fight against Empress Camilla's warriors in the arena, after she found Valeros being attacked by a White Ape. The White Ape had nearly killed Valeros, but because he had just killed three bandits, as well as wounding the White Ape to the point where it would eventually bleed to death, she decided he would make a good warrior in the arena.
Because Valeros showed mercy by sparing the lives of those he defeated, Xanesha had punished him by using her whip on his bare back and told him that if he spares another life, he will be trading it for his own.
